Britton Deerfield's varsity girls tame Cougars, Tigers

Britton Deerfield’s varsity girls basketball team opened its season with a 60-13 victory over Lenawee Christian at Britton on Tuesday, Nov. 27 and followed with a 57-24 home win on Friday, Nov. 30, against Hudson.Cambria Handy led BD in the win against Hudson, scoring 13 points with seven rebounds and four steals.“We had a real team effort tonight with balanced scoring,” said BD coach Craig Tanis. “Even though we struggled a bit offensively, our defense made the difference and I thought our bench played very well. It was another solid win for us.”Morgan Tanis added eight points and three rebounds: Janessa Handy, four points, five assists and 10 steals; Taylor Cousino, five points and three rebounds; Alicia Gotz, seven points and seven rebounds; Kennedy Budd, five points and eight rebounds; and Emily Shields, six points and three rebounds.In the Patriots game against Lenawee Christian, Cambria Handy scored 19 points to lead BD’s offense while adding seven rebounds.“Overall, I am very pleased with our effort tonight from start to finish from all eleven players,” said Tanis. “We played good defense and rebounded well.”Tanis scored 12 points while adding seven rebounds (5 offensive), and three steals. Janessa Handy added six points, six assists, and nine steals: Taylor Cousino, two points, six rebounds (5 offensive); Abbey Meinert, eight points, three rebounds; Alicia Gotz, three points, three rebounds, and three steals; Kennedy Budd, four points, two rebounds and Emily Shields, five points, three rebounds, and three steals.
