Cause of Britton fire still unknown

The fire at Interstate Pallet Company, located at 294 Maple Street in Britton, on Wednesday, March 18, is still under investigation, according to Ridgeway Fire Department Chief Jim Frayer. The building was a complete loss. Frayer added the property does not receive village water and sewer services, and that there is no contact information available for the property’s owner, Glenn Guy. A phone call to Interstate Pallet Company’s listed number by the Herald discovered the line has been disconnected. No one was injured in the fire, said Frayer, though he added one Ridgeway Fire Department firefighter had to be treated for heat exhaustion. That firefighter returned to work Thursday, March 19.At approximately 3 p.m. Wednesday, Lenawee County Dispatch reported a caller responded after hearing an explosion while another caller reported seeing flames. Frayer said that several propane tanks were located on the property, some of which exploded. The Herald was on the scene when an explosion occurred. Shortly after one explosion, a primary utility pole burned from the fire, fell, taking power lines with it. Frayer said the Village of Britton was without power for an estimated one-and-a-half hour.
