Cities that allow backyard chickens are not reporting problems

To the Editor, I was saddened to hear that the city council has decided against allowing residents to have chickens, after repeated requests, as well as information and facts being presented to them. Although I don’t intend to have chickens, I would love to see my neighbors have them. We garden, partly to teach our children about how food grows. Having neighbors with chickens would allow them to learn even more about where our food comes from, and taking it further, how important it is to take care of our environment. I hope that those who are supporting this effort will continue to push the issue. I have heard very few voices that are against allowing chickens, and the reasons that I’ve heard don’t pan out. Other cities that allow chickens aren’t inundated with nuisance calls over smelly chicken coops, nor have coyotes become any more of a problem than they were with already allowed pets. I hope that those representing us will see that the general public does support this change.Cindy HughesTecumseh
