Classic Car and Bike Show kicks off fifth year in downtown Tecumseh

Tecumseh’s Classic Car and Bike Show, now entering its fifth year, began as a way to attract people downtown during evening hours and encourage businesses to stay open later one night a week. The show kicked off this year’s series on Thursday, May 21. “That’s how the car show came about,” said Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch. “I’ve always been kind of a fan of cars. There was always an interest to start a car show.” Welch added that ididit, a major sponsor of the show that helps cover the cost of the dash plaques, helped the city organize the event. Over the years, Welch said that there have been several great cars at the show. “A couple of years ago, we had a car group that came from the west side of state,” said Welch. “There were some original Auburns, which are very rare and very expensive. A lot of people were excited about that.” The Auburn Automobile Company was a brand name of automobiles produced from 1900 through 1936, which fell victim to The Great Depression and financial mismanagement. One year, a vehicle from a recent Batman movie made an appearance at the show, which kids really liked, Welch said. Not all cars that attend the event are expensive or rare, Welch added. “Generally, we get cars that sometimes have been in their garage that they had for 10 or 20 years,” he said. “They’re not collector cars, but [the owners] are proud of them. That’s more of the goal to bring people out and have some fun.”Welch said even though the weather wasn’t warm Thursday, the show’s opening day turnout was good.“I think it’s good for our downtown,” he said. “It’d be nice to do it every week.” The show coincides for part of the summer with Music in the Park at Adam’s Park, located next to Tecumseh City Hall a few blocks east of the car show, which is located on Ottawa Street near the intersection of Chicago Boulevard. This is Music in the Park’s 11th year, according to Cultural and Leisure Services Director Shelly Lim. Music in the Park begins Thursday, June 18, with The Jeff Williams Group, which plays a mix of blues and jazz, according to Lim. July 18 sees the Jo Serrapere Trio perform while August 20 has Bull Halsey scheduled. On September 17, Mojo Phoenix Blues Band performs. “It’s a great mix of entertainment,” Lim added. The sponsor for Music in the Park is now the Elizabeth Ruthruff Wilson Foundation along with the City of Tecumseh. “It’s a great way to spend a Thursday night in Tecumseh,” Lim stated. “It’s a great place to grab your family, grab your friends and spend a couple of hours enjoying live music. It’s been fantastic having the two events. It’s a great way to just wander. You can stroll down to the car show and stop back and listen to the music. It’s worked well to have both events in the same evening.” Those who attend Music in the Park can purchase concessions from Busch’s, which donates all profits back to the event.
