BATTLE CREEK — Clinton’s varsity football team defeated Grand Rapids NorthPoint Christian 42-20 on a snowy Battle Creek field, Saturday, Nov. 21.

The noon Division 6 state semifinal had a winter storm dump several inches of snow on the field but the cold conditions didn’t seem to affect the Redskins. Clinton took a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and closed the first half leading 35-14.

The Redskins added another touchdown and good point after touchdown kick in the third quarter for a 42-14 advantage.

The Mustangs finished all scoring in the fourth quarter with a touchdown.

Noah Poore rushed 28 times for 248-yards and four touchdowns for Clinton while teammate Mathew Sexton had 25 carries for 182-yards and two touchdowns.

“The offensive line played with great heart and composure and controlled the blitzing NorthPointe Christian defense,” said Clinton coach Scott McNitt. “Alex McIntosh, Kenny DeShano, Austin Popp, Aaron Fowler, Ethan Vaughn, Blake Rogers and Josh Brown dug in the icy surfaces and wedged some nice holes for the running backs to run through.”

Clinton quarterback Kaden Kelly connected with Sexton on an 18-yard touchdown pass for his lone completion on the day.

Erik Bouse converted 6-of-6 extra point kicks for the Redskins.

Defensively, Clinton held North Pointe Christian to just 95-yards rushing and 120-yards passing.

Leading Clinton’s defense in tackles was Aaron Fowler, Joe Spence, David Chantelois and Blake Rogers with six tackles each.

Josh Brown (5), Trent Sexton (4), Clark Nelson (4, fumble recovery), Steve Laurell (3), Sexton (4), Jason Ahrens (4), Poore (4), and DeShano (4) each added tackles for Clinton.

With the win, the undefeated Redskins (13-0) advance to the home of the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Friday, 4:30 p.m., and face undefeated Ithaca (13-0) in a rematch of the 2013 state final. Ithaca defeated Clinton 41-22 for the state title in 2013.
