Clinton qualifies for playoffs with Homecoming win over Sand Creek

A dominating 56-6 Tri-County Conference Homecoming victory on Friday, Oct. 2, has Clinton’s varsity football team qualified for the playoffs.The Redskins kept the Aggies scoreless through the first three quarters, closing the first quarter leading 35-0 and the first half up 42-0. Clinton held a 49-0 lead heading into the final quarter.Mathew Sexton scored four touchdowns with 150 yards rushing to lead Clinton to the victory. Steve Laurell helped the Redskins out with 107 yards rushing while Blake Rogers had an interception for a touchdown to help secure the homecoming victory. Sexton had touchdown runs of 55-, 24- and 46-yards and added a 52-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Kaden Kelly. Laurell scored twice on runs of 10- and 49-yards while Cordell Hernandez added a five-yard touchdown run. Clinton’s Brad Gilbert added 79 yards on 14 carries. Noah Poore (1-14), Kelly (1-2) and Hernandez (6-26) added rushing yards for Clinton. Place kicker Erik Bouse was perfect on extra point kicks with eight. The Redskins rushed for 376 yards behind the offensive line blocking of Alex McIntosh, Austin Popp, Kenny DeShano, Ethan Vaughn, Aaron Fowler, Liam Tapp, Josh Brown and Trent Sexton. Kelly and Clark Nelson combined for 54 yards on 4-of-5 completed passes with Sexton, Dan Tomalak and Ian Pizzo credited with the receptions. Defensively, Noah Saren, Laurell and Rogers led Clinton in tackles with six each. Clark Nelson (3), Gilbert (2), Brown (3), Fowler (3), Sexton (2, interception), Jason Ahrens (2), David Chantelois (4), DeShano (3, sack, tackle for loss, fumble recovery), Joe Spence (3), Trent Sexton (4), Tapp (2), Hernandez (3) and Vaughn (1) added tackles. Clinton’s Offensive Player of the Game was Austin Popp while defensive honors went to Blake Rogers. The Red Army Player of the Game was Liam Tapp while Erik Bouse was named Special Teams Player of the Game. Clinton automatically qualified for 2015 MHSAA State play-offs with the win. The Redskins are now 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the TCC. The Redskins travel to Summerfield (5-1, 3-1 TCC) on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
