Clinton rolls on with win over ‘Dogs
Another varsity football victory has Clinton rolling on undefeated at 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the Tri-County Conference (TCC). The Redskins blasted past visiting Morenci on Friday, Oct. 5, for a big 42-12 homecoming victory.
Clinton dominated the contest from the start, taking a 13-0 lead with rushing touchdowns from quarterback TJ Baker and Collin Poore before allowing the Bulldogs on the board. The Redskins closed the first half with a 28-6 advantage after having Brett Tschirhart and Baker rush in for touchdowns in the second quarter.
Both teams scored a touchdown in the third quarter. Clinton’s came on a seven yard run by Michael Sexton, and the Redskins held a 34-12 lead going into the final quarter.
Mathew Sexton scored the game’s final touchdown while Tschirhart added two points on his second conversion run for the Redskins.
Baker (13-105) and Poore (15-103) led Clinton’s rushing attack. Mathew Sexton (70 yards on 5 carries) Tschirhart (5-26), Mike Sexton (2-7), Jared Sackett (2-15), KC Clegg (1-2) and Kyle Perry (1-5) each added rushing yards for Clinton.
Baker completed 8-of-12 passes for 70 yards.
Cullen Zimmerman (3-23), Collin Poore (3-32), Matt Sexton (1-5) and Dylan Spurlock (1-10) had receptions for Clinton.
Offensive lineman Devin Lillis, Grant Clark, Keegan Ward, John Sullivan, Grant Holbrook, Foster Griffin, Mike Mistopoulos and Spurlock were credited by coach Scott McNitt for providing sound blocking.
Foster Griffin and Kyle Perry led the Redskins in tackles with nine each.
Clinton’s Offensive Player of the Week honors went to Devin Lillis while Nate Kaszuba was named Defensive Player.
The ‘Skins’ Special Teams Player award went to Mathew Sexton while KC Clegg was named Clinton’s Red Army Player of the Week.
Clinton hits the road on Friday, Oct. 12 to face Summerfield (4-3 overall, 3-2 TCC).
