Clinton shuts out Royals

CLINTON — Clinton’s varsity girls soccer team improved to 10-1 overall on Monday evening with a 5-0 shutout at home against Blissfield.The Redskins easily handled Blissfield’s defense, outshooting the Royals 14-8 for the shutout.Taylor Tschirhart scored the first goal of the game nine minutes into the match. Alexis Bruecker was sent into the game soon after and found herself open on the right side of the Royals’ goal where she drilled the ball past the goalkeeper with 17:14 remaining in the first half.In the second half, Bruecker scored again. Kendall Bragg earned an assist on the play, sending the ball to Bruecker after the Redskins moved the ball around the penalty box.Kylee Doty scored two minutes later and Alexia Rolland recorded the final goal of the game with just over 30 minutes remaining.Laura Kersey made eight saves in net. Clara Lovejoy and Rachel Chavez helped Clinton record the shutout, according to coach Ben Murray.Clinton picked up a 3-0 victory against the previously undefeated Grass Lake Warriors on Thursday, April 23.Tschirhart scored a hat trick for the Redskins, scoring one goal in the first half and two in the second. Clinton coach Ben Murray said that Grass Lake held its defensive line close to the half line and Tschirhart was able to score on three near breakaway goals as she beat Grass Lake’s defenders to the ball.“Clinton struggled to control the ball in the first half, as both teams favored playing the ball into the gusting wind,” said Murray. “However, in the second half we were able to establish possession and create some scoring chances.” Laura Kersey recorded five saves in goal for the Redskins.“Goalkeeper Laura Kersey did a fantastic job of coming off her back line, taking away the long balls sent by Grass Lake midfielders,” Murray commented.
