Clinton tops Whitmore Lake in homecoming

A big 22-point fourth quarter secured a Tri-County Conference victory for Clinton’s varsity boys basketball team on Friday, Feb. 1, with the Redskins recording a 68-57 victory over visiting Whitmore Lake.Clinton held a one-point (19-18) lead after one quarter of play and finished the first half with a two-point (32-30) advantage.At halftime, the Redskins crowned Kellen Craig homecoming queen and Johnny Allen homecoming king.The Redskins increased their lead to 46-42 heading into the final quarter and controlled the court in the fourth with a 22-point offensive effort to secure the victory. “We played hard and played tough on the boards,” said Clinton coach Mike Ruhl. “It was a fast-paced game and Whitmore Lake has talented guards. With balanced scoring and some key stops as the game wore on, we were able to pull away. We are in a position where the only option in order to achieve our goals is to win out. That is our focus.” TJ Baker and Marco Nunzi each scored 14 points to lead Clinton’s offense. Baker also added eight rebounds and three assists while Nunzi added six steals and five assists.Grant Clark recorded a double-double for Clinton with 12 points and 11 boards while Ricky Miller scored 13 points and added eight rebounds and five blocks. Ryan Karapas chipped in nine points while Cody Mulready (4 assists) and Luke Schaffner added three points each.Clinton (12-2 overall, 7-2 TCC) was scheduled to host Britton Deerfield on Tuesday, Feb. 5.
