By MICKEY ALVARADO
Clinton High School claimed the Class C District championship at Whitmore Lake with a 65-43 victory against Ann Arbor Greenhills on Friday, March 8. The Redskins followed with a huge 52-29 victory against Hanover Horton in the regional opener at Hudson on Monday, March 11.
“It’s been awesome!” said Clinton coach Mike Ruhl. “We’ve had different guys step up in each of our four post-season wins, and we’ve won in different ways. That’s how you get it done in March. We’ve been great with all of these one-day turnarounds and have prepared well for different styles of play on short notice. As it’s been all year, the bigger the game, the better we play.”
Clinton came back to win the regional game in the second half after Hanover Horton took a 24-23 lead into halftime.
Ruhl said that it was again a huge fourth quarter effort by his team that made the difference in the game. Marco Nunzi spearheaded the scoring run with 12 straight points in the final frame and in the process, changed the entire complexion of the game in the Redskins’ favor.
Nunzi led Clinton’s offense with 21 points, four assists, four steals and three rebounds while TJ Baker added 18 points, six rebounds and six assists.
The Redskins hit 12-of-16 free throws to help secure the win in the fourth quarter.
Clinton’s Luke Schaffner had seven points and five rebounds; Grant Clark, six points and nine rebounds; Ryan Karapas, three points; and Ricky Miller, two points, six rebounds and five blocked shots.
The win improved the Redskins overall season record to 22-3 heading into the Wednesday, March 14, regional contest at Hudson against Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central. The winning team advances to the state quarterfinals on March 19.
The Redskins have scorched the net during the season, averaging more than 50 points per game for a total of 1412. Clinton has given up a total of 1133 points.
Against the Greenhills for the district title, Clinton led 17-11 going into the second quarter and closed the first half with a 30-15 lead.
The Redskins went on a huge 21-0 scoring run in the middle quarters and never looked back.
Miller led the Redskins with 19 points, seven rebounds and four blocks while Baker added 18 points, six rebounds and six assists. Clinton’s Clark added 14 points and eight rebounds while Nunzi had seven points, 10 assists and six rebounds.
