Community should support backyard chicken ordinance

To the Editor,I am a Tecumseh resident and I support backyard chickens. By some of the letters to the editor it seems those who oppose want to name call to push their agenda. I will not. I will only present the facts that I have learned looking into this issue. The fact is three hens produce less waste than one average sized dog. That means something to me, since my neighbor has two dogs. I would have to get six chickens to keep up with them. We are only asking for four. Speaking of waste. Dog poop is useless and contains some bad stuff in it, such as roundworm, hookworm and giardia. All can be passed to humans. Chicken poop on the other hand is gold for gardens. Noise, chickens cluck, dogs bark. No brainer there. Odor, most people who are afraid of this aspect usually are mistaken with the larger farms. They do stink, however four hens, collectively do not produce the waste as one average dog. Pests and rodents, chickens do not attract either one. Their feed does, as does cat food or dog food.Properly stored feed will keep that problem from happening. In fact chickens eat bugs such as ticks. We only need to look at our neighbors, Raisin Township and see that none of these concerns have materialized at all. We need to be a community that embraces ideas that help people learn and want to grow their own food not a community that call names when discussing ideas. Is that what we teach our kids? No wonder our country is in such disarray. Backyard chickens should be an ordinance and be enforced. It is that simple.Tom HawkinsTecumseh
