Council approves closing alley
At the Monday, July 16, meeting of the Tecumseh City Council, approval was granted for the closure of the alley alongside Muk’s Sports Pub.
The unanimous vote followed the recommendation from City Manager Kevin Welch.
No comments were made on the proposal at a public hearing, however, a letter opposing the action was received from Guy Mawaring, chairman of the Downtown Development Authority (DDA).
Manwaring stated said the alley was “not conducive to foot traffic,” and that closing it would not reduce the city’s liability of future accidents. The DDA chairman also noted that the alley had been in use for more than 100 years.
Welch had based his recommendation to close the alley, at least in part, due to the narrow opening off S. Evans Street, making it a potential hazard for pedestrians.
The parking lot located on the southwest downtown block which the alley leads into would still have three other access points, two off S. Pearl Street and one just south of the alley off S. Evans Street.
The alley will be closed off to traffic from S. Evans to just behind the former Chocolate Vault.
Letters about the closing were sent to businesses prior to Monday’s vote. Welch said he had received no negative feedback.
