Council candidate to host coffee hour at Scout Cabin on Oct. 1

To the Editor:My name is Gayle Keiser, and I am a candidate for Tecumseh City Council in the upcoming election on November 3.In 2009, I moved to Tecumseh from Galesburg, Illinois. The first time I visited here earlier that year, I was impressed with three things about our community: the Tecumseh District Library, the Community Center located in the Hayden Mill, and the vibrant and diverse downtown business district. During my thirty years in Illinois, I taught political science at Knox College, established and managed an American Artcraft and custom framing business and served as Executive Director for the Illinois Stewardship Alliance, a statewide nonprofit organization working with farmers in sustainable and organic agriculture and establishing direct markets that connect them with customers. Locally, I served on the Tecumseh District Library Board for two years, began teaching as adjunct faculty at Siena Heights University in the Masters of Business Administration Leadership Program, and enjoyed classes at the Community Center. On week-ends, I volunteer as an usher for Adrian Symphony performances and events at the Tecumseh Center for the Arts.As a retired business owner, I understand the importance of a thriving local economy to the overall vitality of our community. I believe the Tecumseh City Council must lead in recruiting new businesses, expanding local job opportunities and promoting existing businesses. I believe it’s essential to set community-minded priorities and to use every tax dollar wisely. While I’ve campaigned for this office, many Tecumseh residents have expressed their interest in quality-of-life issues, including programs for seniors and children, maintaining and improving our public parks, enlarging the Saturday Farmers Market and establishing a covered site for its future location. I will treat all these concerns as priorities if voters give me an opportunity to serve on the Council. My prior experience — in public office, working with farmers in sustainable agriculture, and leadership in the nonprofit sector — gives me the right qualifications to chart Tecumseh’s path forward. I will work to earn public confidence and give you, the residents of Tecumseh, influence over my decisions. Please join me for “Coffee with the Candidates” this Thursday, October 1, 7 p.m., at the Tecumseh Scout Cabin, located in Elliott Park at the corner of East Kilbuck and South Ottawa Streets. Come enjoy coffee and dessert and join me in a discussion of issues facing our community. I’m asking for your vote on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Thank you!Gayle KeiserTecumseh
