Council honors police officers for bravery
At the Monday, Sept. 15, Tecumseh City Council meeting, council members had little on the agenda before adjourning into closed session due to attorney-client privilege. Before attacking the three-item agenda of new business, Tecumseh Police Chief Troy Stern honored two officers by awarding them with Tecumseh Police Department’s Depart-mental Citation Award. “The Departmental Citation is to be awarded to a police officer for outstand performance of a difficult task involving personal risk to the officer’s safety when, because of the officer’s actions, a serious crime is prevented or the perpetrator is apprehended,” said Stern. Officers Kelley Hissong and Greg Walsh received the award for their handling of a domestic assault on June 26 where a man had armed himself with two shotguns and told officers that they would have to shoot him. Without being able to talk the man into dropping the gun, officer Walsh drew and discharged his Taser, which was ineffective on the subject. Walsh then moved down the stairs and applied another Taser technique, the subject falling to the ground where he was apprehended. Council also honored and congratulated Joe and Sherri Tuckey, recipients of the 2014 Musgrove Evans Award, which had been established by the Tecumseh Area Chamber of Commerce to recognize individuals who made significant and lasting contributions through public service to the community. They will receive the official award Friday, Sept. 19. “We just wanted to say thank you to the people that nominated us for the award, said Joe. “It was quite a surprise to both of us.” The board unanimously approved the closure of Chicago Blvd. from Wyandotte to Adrian Streets on Friday, Oct. 3, from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. for the Tecumseh High School Homecoming Parade. The parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the high school. Council also approved the NE Lenawee Crop walk for Sunday, Oct. 5. The walk starts at 1 p.m. at Tecumseh High School. This is the 14th year of the event.
