Council voted no on chickens because they’re already here

To the Editor, First, I know I am a few days late — just had a baby, so I missed all the drama of the city council meeting and being able to speak up at it!I have been following it in the news, however, and am thrilled with all the support in favor of chickens! One of the main reasons they voted no was because “illegal chicken owners already have chickens.” However, if there are already illegal chickens in town, and probably have been for years, where are all the complaints, police reports of escaped chickens, and chicken disputes about chicken ownership? There haven’t been any since for years chickens haven’t caused any problems! Point proven, they should be allowed, since they are already here and not causing any issues! We moved to the city about a year ago and after a few months figured out our neighbors had chickens. We were very excited since we figured it was fine to have chickens if they did, and planned on getting some this spring before we knew it was illegal. The idea that chickens are going to cause problems is not true, based on the fact that they are already here and not causing problems — wish the mayor would have used a little more common sense before making that his main point. Also, I would like to point out the fact that I bet the mayor has broken the law before (perhaps he has driven his car over the speed limit). Should we then say “take his car away” since he can’t follow the law? It is ridiculous, of course, so should I not be able to have chickens since some people already do and it is illegal? Why not just make them legal, and move on already!I am sure there are way more important things for the city to be working on than a few chickens!Hanna RussoTecumseh
