Dan Sidney Root

Dan Sidney Root, 87 of Tecumseh passed away peacefully on May 22 at Tecumseh Place. He was born Dec. 28, 1925 in Albion, N.Y., the son of Orpheus Arnold and Ellen (Curtin) Root. He was married to Margery Ann Garvey on June 27, 1953 and she preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 2009.Dan graduated from the University of Detroit with a Business Administration degree, and was employed in municipal bond sales for 25 years, followed by 10 years as a tax assessor. He was a regular member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Tecumseh. Dan enjoyed watching football, watching the financial markets, and political news. He was a history buff who enjoyed studying past presidents and World War II. He enjoyed and appreciated farmers and all the good work farms did for society. He loved spending time with his family and friends.Dan is survived by his six children: five sons, Dan (Shawn) Root of Tecumseh; Lawrence (Joan) Root of Kalamazoo; Don Root of Toledo, Ohio; Michael (Sue) Root of Bel Air, Md.; Patrick (Pamela) Root of Santa Fe, Texas; and his daughter, Mary Ellen (Dan) Pizana of Saline, Mich. Grandchildren, Matthew and Eric Root , Shawna (Joey) Blackmer, Alex Pizana, Justin and Joey Root, Jacob (Ellie) Root, and Tyler Root, and one great granddaughter, Hailey Root. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and two brothers, Norman and Pierson.Visitation will be Monday, May 27, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Tecumseh, Mich. from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Visitation will continue on Tuesday morning at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. The funeral mass will be on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Daniel Wheeler as Celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow at Ridgeway Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Dan’s honor to the Discalced Carmelite Sisters.
