Donald Frederick Maves

Donald Frederick Maves was born to his Canadian-native parents, E. A. Paul and Arnetta Stoskopf Maves, on December 19, 1930 in Ferndale, Mich. He had fond memories visiting family in northern and central Ontario. From the fine German upbringing his parents provided, he was a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church of Tecumseh where his faith never waivered.Don married the love of his life and favorite Blissfield “Sugar Girl,” Phyllis Meyers, in 1956 at Grace Lutheran Church on September 29. During those faithful years they provided a stable and lively home to their sons, Dan and Tom; he was proud of them both. He always had very solid buddies who grew into a solid group of life-long, treasured friends. He served his country as a combat artillery Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a life member and past commander of Underwood ORR Post 34 American Legion and 40/8. For more than 25 years he and his good buddy faithfully placed American flags in downtown Tecumseh on major holidays and on the graves of veterans at many county cemeteries on Memorial Day. With his father at first and not long after his brother, Doug, he owned Paul’s Trailer Park and Paul’s Trailer Sales; later nephew Kirk joined in and later son Dan. He considered the outdoors to be one of God’s greatest gifts; his favorite places included his farm, the beach in Stuart, Fla., and the Powder River country of Wyoming. He was an avid fan of University of Michigan sports teams. Don passed away peacefully in his own home on his favorite holiday, Memorial Day, May 26, 2014.He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Doug.
