Dr. Harry Rudolph “Bud” Pape, Jr.

Dr. Harry Rudolph “Bud” Pape, Jr., age 77 of Britton, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, at his home under the tender care of his family and Hospice of Lenawee. He was born March 31, 1937, in Chicago, Ill., to Harry Rudolph and Vina Pearl (Derry) Pape, Sr. On June 24, 1961, at the Congregational Church in Britton, he married Diana June Seagert and she survives. Bud graduated from Hirsch High School in Chicago in 1955, Western Michigan University in 1957, University of Michigan Dental School in 1961 and received his Masters of Microbiology in 1975 from the University of Michigan. Bud proudly served his county in the U.S. Navy on the USS Proteus (Sub Tender) as a dentist and anesthetist from 1961-1963. Bud had a private dental practice in Quincy, Mich., from 1963-1971. He was a dentist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan from 1971-1996 where he taught and was involved in research dentistry. From 1989-1996 he was a research dentist for Xyitol chewing gum study in Belize City, Belize, Central America. Bud was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Britton. He was a member of Maple City Swingers square dance club, a 4-H project leader for Britton-Macon and Palmyra Future Leaders 4-H clubs and received his black belt from American Taekwondo Association in 1987 at the age of 50. Bud was a former fireman and EMT with the Ridgway Township Fire Department. He was a Civil War reenactor with the 4th Michigan Infantry, Co. G, portraying a surgeon and infantryman, nationally and locally, especially for the Brookside Cemetery tours. He was also a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Bud also enjoyed sailing, reading, bird watching and tinkering with cars. He loved history, dancing and had a skill remodeling houses and helping others with their projects. Bud loved spending time with his family, and his greatest joy, his grandchildren. He always had patience and encouragement for those around him.In addition to his wife, Diana, he is survived by his children, Nancy (Dennis) Findley of Tecumseh, Dale Pape of Adrian, Jerry (Tammy) Pape of Palmyra and Yvonne (Jeremy) McNicol of Britton; nine grandchildren, Tara (Tyler) Schmiesing, Aaron Findley, Allison (Travis English) Pape, Matthew, Durand, Keeley, and Deltann Pape, Natalie and Brett McNicol. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Seth McNicol.Funeral services for Bud will be Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, at 11 a.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Britton, with Vicar David McCarty officiating. Burial will be in Ridgeway Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 3-8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Tecumseh and on Saturday at the church from 10-10:45 a.m. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.andersonfuneralservices.com.
