Edward D. Steinman

Edward D. Steinman has taken his final flight at age, 93. He passed away New Years Day at Hospice of Lenawee. Ed proudly served as a pilot during WWII with the 12th Air Force in the Mediterranean Theater of operations in the 319th Bombardment group. He flew the twin engine bombers B25, B26 and the A26. He was stationed on the islands of Sardinia and Corsica, off the coast of Italy, flying missions to cut the supply lines of the German Army coming down from the north. He was not involved in bombing cities with their civilian populations. On his very first mission over the Po Valley, Italy 1944, the aircraft flying next to him was badly damaged by anti-aircraft fire. He witnessed the crew exit their aircraft by parachutes.He was also with the 5th Air Force in the Pacific, flying missions from the island of Okinawa during the final days of the war against Japan. He had over 200 hours of air combat time. The Air Force offered him a return to active duty in the Korean War but Ed decided to decline because he now had a wife (Evelyn) and two small children at home. Evelyn had also served her country with the Coast Guard Spars during the war. His love for flying had continued after the war and he flew various small aircraft. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserve and retired after twenty years.Ed worked as a printer for the Detroit Free Press and retired in 1981. He spent many wonderful hours at his daughter’s Ranch, clearing the trails and enjoying the dogs and horses. He swam with the grandkids and kept fit by rowing his boat around the lake. He liked working at his computer, printing photos and making frames.He was preceded in death by Evelyn Hixenbaugh (Steinman) and his son Wayne Steinman (2004). He will be missed and was dearly loved by his son Gary Steinman of Tecumseh and a daughter Lesa (Larry) Allen of Tipton; brother Bill Steinman of Presscott, Ariz.; sister Audrey Lyster of Lakeland, Fla.; nieces, Nancy, Sherrie, Stacy and Yvonne. Grandchildren; Heather, Keith and Bruce Allen; Kelly (Jim) Smith; Jeremy Paul (Steinman), Josie and Sara; Great grandchildren; Cheyanne and Kylie Smith.A memorial services for Edward will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Tecumseh. Visitation will be held from 12 Noon until the time of the service.Condolences may be sent to the family at www.andersonfuneralservices.com. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lenawee.
