Ethel C. Harkcom

Ethel C. Harkcom, age 93, of Tecumseh, Mich., and formerly of Monclova and Walbridge, Ohio, passed away on October 31, 2014 in Tecumseh, Mich. Ethel was born on September 21, 1921, in Oregon, Ohio, to the late William Henry and Clara (Beichter) Moritz. She graduated from Clay High School in 1939 and from Tri State Business College in 1940. Ethel married Richard Harkcom of Monclova, Ohio, on June 20, 1943, in St. John’s Lutheran Church. They were married for 42 years and farmed together in Monclova. The farm was in the family for 104 years on Maumee Western Road. Ethel worked as a dietary aide at St. Luke’s Hospital in Maumee from 1972-1985 and had perfect attendance. In 1980 she awarded St. Luke’s first Courtesy In Action Rewards Everyone. She also enjoyed working at Hoen Greenhouse for 15 years as a planter. 4-H was very important to her. She was an advisor for 27 years and received the 4-H Advisor Merit Award. Ethel exhibited her vegetables at the Lucas County Fair and won many awards. She enjoyed traveling, playing pinochle, euchre, bingo, doing jigsaw puzzles, sewing plastic canvas, and baking pies to share them with friends. Ethel was a loving mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by her family.Ethel is survived by four daughters: Jean (Michael) Mertes, Tiffin Ohio; Eileen (David) Milka, Bedford, Ind.; Joyce (John) Lusch, Waterville, Ohio; and Marcia (David) Tilton, Britton, Mich., and son, Brian Harkcom, Mesa, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, Lisa (Jeff) Margraf, Lori (Donald) Ferguson, Jim Mertes, Jill (James) Mitchell, Jason Milka, Jennifer (David) Coss, Julie (Shawn) Cole, Jared (Elizabeth) Scaife, Amy (Jeff) Grof, and Stacy (Joshua) Pietrocini; and 16 great grandchildren. Ethel is also survived by brothers; Roy (Pauline) Moritz and William (Julie) Moritz of Oregon Ohio. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Richard in 1986; sisters, Thelma Niederhouse, Velma Fansler, Gladys Harter and grandson, Jeffrey Milka.We would like to thank all of the staff and caregivers at Cambrian Assisted Living and Great Lakes Hospice for the excellent care she was shown. Family and friends were received at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant St., Maumee on Friday, Nov. 7, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Interment followed at Swan Creek Cemetery, Monclova, Ohio.
