George E. Green Jr.

George E. Green Jr., 96, died peacefully Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at home in Bradenton, Fla., son of George and Carrie Green, brother of David Green of East Palatka, Fla., and two sisters, the late Barbara Hundley and Doris Ramsay. He is survived by his loving wife of 75 years, Mildred L. Green of Bradenton; three daughters, Carol Ann (Dale) Downs of Bradenton, Fla., JoAnn Green of Bradenton, Fla. and Gloria (Dave) Proffitt of Crete, Ill. He was a devoted grandfather to five grandchildren, Todd (Tamara) Downs, Scott (Ivy) Downs, Ben (Kelly) Proffitt, Betsy (Nick) Serder and Bodie (Kristen) Proffitt and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was a graduate of Jackson High School, Jackson, Mich., Jackson Junior College, Worsham College of Mortuary Science Chicago, Ill., and The University of Michigan. He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Pentwater, Mich., and The University of Michigan Alumni Association. He married Mildred L. Hollingshead in Reading, Mich., where he served his apprenticeship at the Stefel Funeral Home. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in WWII.

He owned and operated the Green Funeral Home in Tecumseh, Mich., served as the Branch Manager of the American National Bank in Plainwell, Mich., Vice President of the First National Bank of Three Rivers, Mich. George and Mildred retired in 1966 to Bradenton, Fla., where he enjoyed tennis, swimming and playing in dance bands. Summers were spent in Pentwater, Mich., where he played in the Pentwater Civic Band; he was a co-founder of the Pentwater Tennis Club.

At the request of the family there will be no service. A graveside service for the family will be held at a later date in Reading, Mich. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions are made to the Salvation Army.
