Google shows that backyard chicken complaints is a non-issue

To the Editor,Dear City Council,My wife and I were among the many at Monday’s council meeting who were too reserved to muster a comment. But I wanted to take a moment to express our opinion on the backyard hen issue.Let me preface this writing by saying that we have no interest in ever raising hens. We do, however, have several friends who keep hens. Based on their enjoyment and successes, I can see why the urban hen movement is growing.Unsure of what your objections are to backyard hen raising, I Googled “backyard chicken complaints” on the Internet. To my surprise, I really couldn’t find any credible drawbacks. The few objections I found seemed to be based on speculation and misinformed fear-mongering. A common thread repeated throughout my Google search was that hen complaints are a “non-issue.” Cities that allow hens have many more complaints about barking dogs and stray cats than backyard chickens by a margin of about 99 to 1.My wife and I moved into town because of Tecumseh’s vibrant, innovative atmosphere. This is also what most young adults are seeking when they look for a town to settle down in. The urban hen movement is gaining momentum across the United States. The City of Tecumseh can either be one of the leaders in capitalizing on its popularity to attract young adults or it can become just another stale and stodgy struggling town in the rust belt.Jim and Kathy ZeichmanTecumseh
