Handler Funeral Homes collecting used cell phones for military members

Many people have replaced their old cell phones with new smart phones and are reluctant to throw their old device in the trash for ecological reasons. Now there is a program that can make good use of those old cell phones called Cell Phones for Soldiers.Rob Silas, an employee at Handler Funeral Home, 313 W. Pottawatamie St., in Tecumseh is collecting old phones for distribution to all people in the military in cooperation with funeral director Nick Handler.Silas said that the national program collects all cell phones of any age or description and when a sufficient number have been collected, the national headquarters sends instruction for where the phones should be mailed. The newer phones are refurbished and the hopelessly outdated ones are used for parts that are sold. The profits of those sales are used to purchase minutes for military personnel in bases around the world to call their families back in the U.S. The phones that can be rejuvenated are tweaked to allow for international service so that military personnel can use them wherever they are.“It’s a great program, and it benefits all branches of the military,” said Silas. “It’s called Cell Phones for Soldiers, but anybody serving or who has served will benefit. There are clubs and other organizations that are collecting, also, but in the Tecumseh, Clinton, Adrian area, as far as I’m aware, we are the only place where the general public can drop off their phones for the program.”Cell Phones for Soldiers has benefited servicemen and women with free communication since 2004, but a new initiative of the program concentrates on veterans who have returned home from active duty since 2001. The subtitle of this campaign is “Helping Heroes Home” and its goal is to help recently discharged military personnel re-assimilate into the stateside life they left to serve their country. For further information on the programs, logon to www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com or call organization information officer David Foster at 866.801.8355.
