Hazel Marie Humphrey Todd

Hazel Marie Humphrey Todd, 84, of Scott Depot, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at the Cleveland Clinic from a sudden illness. She was born in Raleigh County as the first child of Walter Humphrey and Merle Barrett Humphry. In addition to her parents, Hazel was predeceased by her husband, Charles W. Todd, and by one sister, Francis Humphrey. Surviving Hazel are her brother, Ralph Humphrey of Dry Creek, her sisters Elizabeth Wilkes of Scott Depot, Patsy Humphrey of Dry Creek, and Connie Stone (Mike) of Seth, nephew Brad Phelps (Melanie) of Milton, and brother in law, Larry Todd (Brenda) of Beckley. Hazel graduated from Marsh Fork High School and earned degrees from Concord College and Eastern Michigan University.Her 40-year teaching career began at Pettus Elementary in Raleigh County and ended with Tecumseh Public Schools in Tecumseh, Mich. Hazel was a member of the Tecumseh Presbyterian Church (USA). She and Charles lived in Michigan for 49 years before returning to their beloved home state of West Virginia in their retirement years. Although she suffered for years with severe rheumatoid arthritis, she never complained and managed to thoroughly enjoy her life. She had a keen wit, a fine sense of humor, and a memory to be envied. Visitation will be for one hour starting at 10 on Friday, July 24, 2015 at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Whitesville, W.Va. followed with a graveside service at 12 p.m. led by Karen McClanahan (CLP) at the Barrett Cemetery in Dry Creek. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Marsh Fork Presbyterian Church of Dry Creek, W.Va.
