Helene Langthorne Rose

Helene Langthorne Rose was born in Macon, Mich., December 4, 1917, to Margaret Hughes and James D. Langthorne. She grew up on a farm on Newberg Road north of Tecumseh and attended Tecumseh schools, graduating high school in 1936. She earned a Bachelors degree from Michigan State Normal Teachers College in Ypsilanti, Mich., now Eastern Michigan University. She received a Master’s Degree from the University of Southern California. She taught school in Mt. Clemens and Adrian, Mich., and Shaker Heights, Ohio. She married Robert B. Rose in 1947 in Shaker Heights. They were long time residents of Long Beach, Calif., where she taught in the Long Beach Schools, was the first woman principal there, and retired in 1988 as the Director of Young Childhood Education. She and Bob enjoyed fifty years together playing golf, bridge, traveling and entertaining friends and family. Both loved music and the theater. Her Christian faith was important to her. She attended the Community Church near her home. Her mother had emigrated from Ballymena, Northern Ireland, as a young girl, and Helene maintained a connection with Northern Irish relatives visiting them several times. She passed away at her home in Long Beach on December 4, 2013, on her 96th birthday. Helene will be greatly missed by her family and many dear friends.Preceding her in death are her parents, husband Robert B. Rose, her brothers Raynor (Alta Bailey) Langthorne and Francis (Gulie Swan) Langthorne, sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Dorothy Rose Baker (Hal), Barbara Rose Friewald (Bill), and nephews Bob Friewald and Duke Baker. She is survived by a niece, Joanie Langthorne Quinn (Frank), their children Gulie Quinn and Anne Quinn-Diment and Frank Quinn II, and their children Riley Stewart Quinn, Paige E. Quinn and Tyler Hugh Quinn, and her nephew William Baker (Mary), and his children Brian (Linda) Baker and Stacy (Ray) Bobzien and grandson Trevor Baker. Also surviving children of nephew Duke Baker are Lisa Baker Beal and Skipper Baker and granddaughter, Alexandra Baker Beal and nieces Betsy Friewald Butzke and Babette Friewald Mason.Helene requested no funeral or memorial service. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Brookside Cemetery, Tecumseh with Rev. Richard Mortimer officiating.
