Henry “Bus” Karl Smith

Henry “Bus” Karl Smith, age 94, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2016 in Ann Arbor with his twin daughters at his side. He was born on November 19, 1921 in Tecumseh, the son of S. Henry and Nettie (Kaiser) Smith. Henry married Hope Aebersold on February 25, 1944 and they shared 62 wonderful years before her death in 2006.

Henry proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII in the South Pacific (Guam) as a Corpsman.  After the war he was employed by Tecumseh Products until 1978. He constructed his family’s home himself shortly after WWII and home improvements were much a part of his life. Following retirement he enjoyed renovating homes into rental properties in Tecumseh, doing the carpentry work himself. Henry also enjoyed helping friends and family with building projects. He loved spending time with his family, especially around the pool he built in their backyard. A love of animals, especially many dogs and cats over the years, was always a part of Bus and Hope’s life.  Bus and Hope were lifelong residents of Tecumseh where they had many friends. They delivered Meals on Wheels for many years.

Henry is survived by his children, Dr. H. Gregg (Linda) Smith of New Glarus, Wis.; Ted P. (Francis) Smith of Saline, Mich.; Patricia (James) Schuler of Clinton, Mich.; and Pamela (Max) Goldman of Ann Arbor, Mich.; grandchildren, Kim Talarczyk; Jill Kowalski, Scott Smith, Jay Smith and Coelle Smith; eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; his sister-in-law’s, Louise Aebersold and Angie Aebersold.

He is preceded in death by his parents; loving wife, Hope; his sisters, Mary Britton and Beth Karner, and his brother, Maxwell Smith.

Funeral service for Henry will be held on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016 at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes at 2 p.m. with visitation from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Brookside Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of VFW Post No. 4817.
