Indians record five D-3 state cut times, Dexter hits nine to pick up victory

Five Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state qualifying times were recorded by Tecumseh High School’s varsity swim and dive team against visiting Dexter on Thursday, Feb. 5, but the Indians still lost the Southeastern Conference White division meet 110-76.The Dreadnaughts hit nine D-3 state cut times out of 12 events and set the Tecumseh Community Pool record in the opening race of the evening, the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.68).Despite the loss, Tecumseh coach Deb Followell said she was happy with how well the Indians competed, having two new state cut times, against a powerhouse like Dexter.“We’re real excited,” she said. “We had a couple of guys knocking on the door for state cuts. Dylan Coleman was one and he got his tonight in the 50-free and Jacob Schaedler was another one and he got his in the 200 IM.”Coleman, a senior, recorded a state cut time of 23.12 when placing second in the 50-yard freestyle while sophomore Jacob Schaedler recorded a state cut time of 2:10.45 when placing second in the 200-yard IM.Followell said Tecumseh has already qualified all three of its relay teams for the state meet and several other events. Tecumseh senior Bryant Hagemann has qualified for state in the 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyles, and senior Jared Russell qualified for state in the 200 IM and the 100-yard backstroke.Followell hopes to have additional D-3 state representatives before the end of the regular season. The Indians recorded 20 personal-best times during the meet against Dexter.“We have two or three more individuals that keep shaving down time and are getting close,” she said.Dexter recorded state cut times while placing first in the first six events.Hagemann placed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a state cut time of 5:09.03 and second in the 200-yard freestyle with a state cut time of 2:10.45. Coleman placed second in the 50-yard freestyle for the Indians with a state cut time of 23.12.Tecumseh’s Collin Eberle placed first in diving, beating Dexter’s second place finisher, Griffin Beck, 215.20 to 209.90.Russell recorded a first place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a state cut time of 57.89.The Indians are 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Southeastern Conference White Division.
