Indians' varsity wrestling team opens with two home wins

TECUMSEH — Having its season opener at home on Wednesday, Dec. 10, allowed fans of Tecumseh’s varsity wrestling team an opportunity to watch the Indians pick up a pair of wins.Tecumseh dominated the mats, beating Wyandotte Roosevelt 63-11 and Woodhaven 46-25.“I was very happy the way our young guys wrestled,” said first year head varsity coach George Lesko. “We have a lot of new faces in the lineup this year, and those guys performed very well. Of course, our experienced guys certainly met our expectations in dominating fashion.”Lesko took the program over from Josh Lindeman who was at Tecumseh for just one season. Lesko was the assistant coach on the team for three other head coaches.“I feel positive about it,” said Lesko during a pre-season interview. “I’ve been around enough. It’s nothing new.”The Indians had nine wrestlers go 2-0 on the night in its opening dual meet.Against Roosevelt, the Indians opened at 140-pounds and had Austin Zamora record a pin in the second period.Junior Josh Marcum recording a win by pin at 145-pounds in the first period.Junior Kyle Humphries recorded a 5-3 victory at 152-pounds while junior Bryan Tripp won a 5-0 decision at 160-pounds.Tecumseh senior Jacob Treadway won with a pin at 171-pounds, as did senior Kody McCrate at 189.The Indians’ first loss was at 215-pounds with senior Vince Hunter pinned in the first period.Tecumseh senior Nate Brady received a void at 285-pounds.In his first roll as a varsity starter, freshman Hayden Whitehead won by fall at 103-pounds for Tecumseh.“I have to mention our 103-pound wrestler Hayden Whitehead and his determination to make the weight at 103 to help this year’s lineup,” said coach Lesko. “He did it, and performed well. We are looking for him to have a great year as the season moves forward.” Senior Mike Turner won by fall in the third period at 112-pounds for Tecumseh while sophomore Drew Marten won by fall in the second period at 119-pounds.Tecumseh sophomore Nick Rutledge won 10-8 at 125-pounds, senior Wyatt Cadmus won by fall at 130-pounds and junior Sam Anklin lost by a tech fall (21-6) at 135.Against Woodhaven, the Indians won eight-of-12 matches.The contest started at 145-pounds and Tecumseh’s Josh Marcum wrapped up his Warrior for a win by pin in the first period.Humphries won 5-2 at 152-pounds for Tecumseh while Bryan Tripp won a 5-0 decision at 160-pounds.Tecumseh’s Treadway lost 6-3 at 171-pounds.The team split the following two weight classes with McCrate winning by pin in the first period at 189-pounds and the Warriors winning by pin over Vince Hunter at 215-pounds.Heavyweight Brady won with first period fall while Hayden Whitehead won by void at 103-pounds.Turner won by fall in the second period of his 112-pound match while Marten pinned his opponent in the first period at 119-pounds.Rutledge lost by major decision (8-0) at 125-pounds while Cadmus won by fall in the first period at 130-pounds.The Warriors closed the contest with a pair of wins. Anklin lost by fall in the second period at 135-pounds while Zamora lost by fall in the second period at 140-pounds.“We were without a couple starters due to injury and illness, but they will be back soon,” said Lesko. “The wins tonight against Wyandotte and Woodhaven were solid victories against two very good Division 1 teams. Both Wyandotte and Woodhaven should have very good seasons.”The Tribe traveled to Brooklyn for Columbia Central’s Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 13, and went 3-1. The Indians defeated Columbia Central 66-6, Sand Creek 54-20 and Ida 38-26.Tecumseh lost 34-33 to Mason.“We were missing five starters today for our match against Mason due to injury and the ACT Test,” said Lesko. “However, it gave our younger kids some real time in our lineup and many for the first time ever. I think we will look back at today knowing it was a great learning experience for those kids who stepped up to fill some big shoes.”Wrestlers going undefeated at 4-0 for the Indians were Marten (119), Cadmus (130), Marcum (145), Humphries (152), Brady (285).Whitehead (103) and freshman George Tirado (112) and Tripp (160) went 2-2 for the Indians.
