Jackson College drops Lenawee Campus Proposal
JACKSON — Jackson College announced at 9:50 a.m. on July 1 that it will not move forward with a November ballot issue on a proposal to expand facilities and offerings in Lenawee County.
Jackson College officials had considered a proposal to build a new, expanded campus on the former Adrian Training School property. The proposal would have sought a property tax levy of 1.33 mills, which would have been lessened by the Headlee Amendment, to fund the project. Lenawee County students would have become “in-district” students, which the college said would provide lower tuition rates. The proposal, according to Jackson College, would have allowed space for more students, programs and community use.
Based on the results of community forums, telephone and mail surveys, college officials have decided not to pursue the proposal at this time. However, many Lenawee supporters have asked the College to consider it in the future, Jackson College officials said.
“While the community has shown interest in this project, our surveys have shown that this is not the right time to pursue this proposal. We continue our commitment to educating students in Lenawee County, and will see what the future holds,” said Jackson College President Dr. Daniel J. Phelan.
Jackson College officials said they were thankful for the Lenawee Citizens Task Force members who participated in this process.
