Joseph H. Busch

Joseph H. Busch, age 89, of Clinton, Mich., died November 17, 2015 in Dana Point, Calif.

He was born Oct. 11, 1926 in Detroit, the son of Alfred and Anna Delair Busch. On August 20, 1949, he married Marcheta Gillespie at St. Joseph’s Shrine, Irish Hills, Mich.

Joe graduated from Clinton High School in 1945 and served in the Sea Bees in World War II in Guam.  In 1948, he and a partner, Chuck Carlton, opened Country Market on Michigan Avenue west of Clinton, Mich.  Later in 1975 with his sons and Charlie Mattis, he founded J & C Family Foods, now Busch’s Fresh Food Market which has 15 stores operated by his sons.  He was a Rotary member, a Cub Master and a life member of American Legion, VFW, Knights of Columbus and St. Dominic’s Catholic Church.

Since 1986, Joe and Marcheta have spent their winters in Dana Point, Calif. and summers in Clinton, Mich.

Joe is survived by his wife of 66 years Marcheta and their six children: John (Josephine) Busch, Brighton, Mich.; Tim  (Steph) Busch, Laguna Hills, Calif.; Tom (Lori) Busch, Cicero, Ind.; Greg Busch, Newport Coast, Calif.; Karen Busch, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Doug (Kris) Busch, Ann Arbor, Mich.

He is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Cristina Hess, Brad (Amber) Busch, Gianna Busch, Garrett (Betsy) Busch, Kenzie (Collin Vath), Jenny (Gabe Bernhard), Kristin (David Buzanoski), T.J. Busch, Ashley and Kevin Busch.

Also, they have three great-grandchildren: Elliott Busch, Jett Hess and Brady Bernhard. They are expecting five great-grandchildren, including triplets, to be born in 2016.

Joe is survived by his siblings: Dorothy Matthews of Mountain Ranch, Calif., and John E. Busch of Newport Beach, Calif.

His parents, Alfred and Anna, his stepmother, Claire Busch, his three brothers, Wilbur, Alfred and Nelson, all predeceased him.

All are invited to a viewing from 4-6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, at St. Dominic Chapel, 220 Brown Street, Clinton, Mich. followed by the rosary at 6 p.m. for the repose of his soul.  

There will also be a viewing on Tuesday, at 10 a.m.  at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 506 N. Union St. Tecumseh, Mich., followed by the Mass of the Resurrection celebrating his life at 11 a.m. The burial will follow at St. Dominic Catholic Cemetery, 101 River Street N, Clinton, Mich., under the auspices of American Legion Post No. 176.
