Joy Felan

Joy Felan, 70, of Tecumseh died Tuesday February 20 surrounded by loved ones after a brief battle with cancer. She was born on September 29, 1947 in Ypsilanti, Ml, the oldest daughter of Ralph and Myrtie (McCabe) Roulo who both preceded her in death. She graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Wayne, Ml where she was crowned the Homecoming Queen during her senior year.

Following high school, she attended Eastern Michigan University and earned credit towards a teaching degree. While attending school, she worked as a manager for Awrey Bakery.  She left school to marry Leroy Felan in November of 1969 and he survives. One year later, she welcomed her favorite son, Jim (Dee Burnham). Several years later, her favorite oldest daughter, Joanna (Gary Raleigh) arrived followed by her favorite youngest daughter, Renee (Craig) Burck.

Joy returned to Eastern as a non-traditional student and completed her teaching degree in 1988. She majored in English and had almost enough credits for an art major as well. She held numerous jobs including working as a bank teller, teaching cake decorating classes at The Cake Shop of Tecumseh, owning her own cake decorating business and her own gift basket business, serving as a substitute teacher, and most recently working at The Purple Pear Tree also of Tecumseh. But her most important work was that of devoted and loving mother and homemaker.

She was an artist and found creative outlets throughout her life including teaching adult education art classes at the Tecumseh Community Center. She was always an active community member and participated in Welcome Wagon, Bridge Club, PTO through the Tecumseh Public Schools, Girl Scouts, book clubs, Child Study Club and La Leche League.

In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by her dear siblings Gloria Gay Roulo  (David Kingsbury) Bernard (Marlene) Roulo, Bradley (Paulette) Roulo her grandchildren who  lit up her life, Jasmine Gramling, Brendan Kopke, Chase Findley, and newest additions Scott Raleigh and Olivia Burck. She is also survived by numerous life-long friends and dear friends too numerous to mention.

Joy was a kind and nurturing woman who enriched the lives of so many. She will be deeply missed but the love and care she showed for all those she knew will live on.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 23 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes and on Saturday from noon until the time of the service. The funeral service will be celebrated at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 1:00 p.m.  According to her wishes, cremation will follow. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.handlerfuneralhomes.com.
