Junk to Funk Eco fashion show features many unique creations

For the third year, the Junk to Funk fundraiser for the Tecumseh Center for the Arts (TCA), held Thursday, April 10, demonstrated a raft of creative ways fashion can result from recycled materials. The evening began with a reception and silent auction in the TCA lobby prior to the eco-fashion show, which was emceed by Tecumseh Economic Development Director Paula Holtz.“It also gave people an opportunity to get an up-close look at some of the fashions that would be highlighted on the runway, because some of the artists were gracious enough to donate them for the auction,” said Shelley Lim, Tecumseh’s Director of Cultural and Leisure Services. Judges Brooke Treloar, Amie Pelham and Gregg Perez selected winners in four categories from a field of 15 entrants. Their selection for Most Innovative was entitled, “Time for Tea,” created by Payton and Rylie Farinha, with Riley doing the modeling. “It was a sassy little number decorated with tea bags and spoons,” said Lim. “It kind of reminded me of a flapper dress. It was charming.”For the Best Use of Recycling Material, an entry entitled “Protect Your Assets,” took the prize. Kathy Lucha was the creator and model of a fashion completely made from used cell phone cases.“Her earrings were made from ear buds, and honestly, it was something you would just wear,” said Lim. “The judges thought that was a great use of materials.”For the Most Likely to Appear on the Cover of In-Style Magazine “All Keyed Up” was singled out, modeled by Celina Parish. A team from Youth Start, a Goodwill program, fashioned a full skirt that was totally encrusted with keys from discarded computer keyboards.“It was just stunning and so cool,” Lim said. “And it was all youth who created it. They did a spectacular job.”The Judges’ Choice category went to Lydia and Grace Makula, with Lydia modeling their “Stained by the Sea” creation, made from coffee filters, plastic bags and found sea items. “The bottom of the skirt was ruffely and created using the filters,” said Lim. There was also a People’s Choice Award, which went to the “All Keyed Up” selection. Winners received upcycled trophies as well as performance tickets to TCA programs.Three stylist teams also entered the Fashion Wars portion of the show, taking 30 minutes to “make magic happen,” as Lim puts it, using recycled materials, staple guns, glue and duct tape. Team TCA beat out Seasons Salon and Spa and Bad Hair Day? who all had fun with the event.Lim said she was pleased by the attendance of more than 200 people for the event. Organizers are currently tallying the total proceeds from the event.
