LCAN sends thanks for support of College Application Week

To the Editor, The Lenawee College Access Network (LCAN) would like to thank all the school counselors, teachers, and volunteers that helped make LCAN’s 2nd annual College Application Week a success! With participation from nearly all Lenawee county high schools, we enabled high school seniors throughout the county to apply to at least one college or university!LCAN defines post-secondary education as any educational opportunity after high school including the military, trade schools, and apprenticeships, as well as colleges and universities. Post-secondary education is important because individuals with high school or less education earn on the average $30,000 per year, while persons with a four-year degree average nearly double the earnings at $58,000 per year. Additionally, by 2018 — only four years from now — 60 percent of the jobs in Michigan will require education beyond high school. While there is no resource for data on other types of post-secondary training, census data confirms that at the present time only 27 percent of Lenawee adults have two or four-year degrees. To assist in closing this substantial gap the Lenawee College Access Network is working to lower barriers, deliver comprehensive and coordinated services, and share successful strategies. For example, the LCAN will share resources about colleges, scholarships, and financial aid for students and parents. The LCAN will also encourage more students to apply to colleges and complete the FAFSA, the federal financial aid form on which all colleges base financial assistance.
