This year, Lenawee United Way has a goal of raising $1 million throughout the county. According to its website, the mission of the Lenawee United Way is, “to mobilize community resources to create a measurably better life for the people of Lenawee County.”

Holleigh Baker, who co-chairs the campaign with Julie Miller, said that this year’s kick-off began with a breakfast on September 14. A Day of Action took place on September 16 with more than 300 volunteers performing acts of service at 40 different sites.

“This year, instead of just having a “Day of Action,” our theme is, “A Year of Action,” said Baker.

On Thursday, Oct. 4, volunteers visited businesses throughout the county for a “Small Business Blitz,” seeking donations, and raised more than $5,000.

“That was great,” said Baker. “We know what the economy has been like and we know how things have been for small businesses.” She said the blitz was a way for businesses to come together to support the community.

On Wednesday, Nov. 7, United Way will host an event called, “Income Day of Action.” Baker said volunteers will work with Lenawee Christian School students to perform services such as helping to get homes winterized and raking leaves for senior citizens. Individuals who are in need of assistance may call the Lenawee United Way office at 263.4696.

“The nice thing about Lenawee United Way is that all the money is going to stay local,” said Baker. “Our focus this year is Income, Education and Health. One thing that’s been specific to Tecumseh is that we were able to help put a Communities In Schools liaison in Tecumseh High School.” She said that’s an example of how the United Way can help provide local support.

During an upcoming “Give and Win” drive, individuals who donate $52 or more will be entered to win various prizes during a drawing that will be held Friday, Dec. 14. The deadline to make a pledge for that is Wednesday, Nov. 21. Pledge cards may be obtained at the Lenawee United Way office, 1354 N. Main St., Adrian, or by calling Baker at 424.6560.

Two other Days of Action include “Health Day of Action,” scheduled for January 24, which will include a health and wellness fair, and “Education Day of Action” on May 10 with a keynote speaker and activities. For more information, visit lenaweeunitedway.org.
