Letter questions right to deny backyard chickens

To the Editor,When did we stray so far from our roots as to ban residents from taking steps to being self sustaining, and providing their family with food? It wasn’t that long ago when households made their own meals from scratch, planted gardens, and raised chickens for eggs. Now I am sad to see the city giving in to the wishes of nosy neighbors and not allowing people to keep hens for egg production. Does anyone else but me see the problem with this? Hens are a perfectly reasonable animal to keep in small spaces and are providing a service. Why do we allow pets such as dogs (who can be very loud and destructive) but not animals such as chickens who provide a means for food and organic waste disposal? What would our great grandparents say if we told them the city was discouraging growing/raising our own food? I think those opposed to this need to really ask themselves why it is so unacceptable and if they really have any right to tell their neighbors to not have the chickens.Kathryn WeilToledo
