Luanne Smith Schonfeld

Luanne Smith Schonfeld, 61, of Howell, passed away peacefully July 14, 2014 at Arbor Hospice with her loving family at her side, ending an eight-year struggle with cancer. The daughter of Bert and Lee Smith of Tecumseh, she was born Feb. 28, 1953 at St. Joe’s Hospital, Ann Arbor. Along with her parents, she is survived by her son, Matt, and his wife, Meagan, of Ann Arbor, and daughter, Katie, and her husband, Craig, of Chicago. She also leaves her beloved 10-month-old grandson, Lucas Jeffrey; two sisters, Susan, and her husband, Larry, of Philadelphia and Carol and her husband, Wally, of Grosse Pointe; as well as two nieces and three nephews; a very special aunt, Mary Anne Hudge of Ann Arbor, and a host of cousins and caring friends.“Lu,” from age 12, was an avid Detroit Tiger fan and enjoyed nothing more than being at Comerica Park to root for her “Tigs.” She was fortunate in that her son was employed by them when they won the pennant in 2006 and was the guest of management in St. Louis when the team went to the World Series. She was also a world traveler, having gone to Europe, the British Isles, Mexico and Australia with one or both of her children and especially enjoyed doing the Greek Isles with Katie only a few years ago. She loved nothing better than family gatherings and was a fierce competitor in Scrabble, UpWords, gin rummy, hand and foot and a host of other games. She was a dedicated volunteer for LACASA of Livingston County, putting in countless hours on its domestic abuse crisis line. If you had Lu as a friend, you knew great love, generosity and caring. She, in turn, was blessed with friends who gave her care, comfort and compassion, especially during the past year.Lu graduated from Belleville High School in 1971, earned her BA degree from Kalamazoo College and her MBA from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. She was a self-employed photographer and her black and white works are still shown at galleries in Petoskey and Charlevoix. She loved “Fernview” — her getaway cottage in Harbor Springs — and was generous in sharing it with good friends and family.Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LACASA, Arbor Hospice or the American Lung Assoc. Nie Funeral Home, Ann Arbor, is handling arrangements, which were not final at this time. Those interested may call 734.971.2345 for details.Luanne will be deeply missed, but her love of family, her faith and her spirit will live on. Remember: To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die.
