Manchester wins Clinton’s Dave Elliott tournament

Manchester placed first at Clinton’s 39th Annual Dave Elliott Wresting Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 4, while the hosts placed 10th. Madison placed third to lead Lenawee County teams.Clinton also entered a “Redskins” team that finished 14th with 15 points. Clinton scored 84 points to place 10th while Manchester scored 280.50 to win the tournament.Clinton’s top finisher was junior Zech Johnston who finished runner-up at 119-pounds. Johnston (13-7) earned victories against Devan Milish of Michigan Center (13-11 decision) and Mohamed Aljabaly of Coldwater (12-11 decision) before losing by a 15-0 Tech Fall to Mason Smith of Clio in the final.Sophomore Nick Rolland (11-8) placed fourth at 152-pounds for Clinton while senior Kamdan Ward (8-2) placed fourth at 160-pounds. Both wrestlers went 2-2 during the event. Placing sixth for Clinton was freshman Fletcher Mellinger (8-8) at 112-pounds, sophomore Hunter Trubiano (12-7) at 140-pounds and junior Brett Tschirhart (3-3) at 215-pounds.Manchester had six champions at the end of the day with first place finishes by Brendan Abrigo at 103-pounds, Ethan Woods at 112, Brock Vicek at 130, Eric Covel at 152, Michael Golding at 171, and Iain Neff at 215.Clio placed second in the tournament with 220 points. Madison’s Trojans scored 168 team points for third place while Coldwter was fourth with 135.5 points. Michigan Center placed fifth (108), Onsted sixth (96.5), Whittemore-Prescott, seventh (93), Napoleon, eighth (91.5) and Blissfield, ninth (90).Madison had two champions, seniors Isaiah Espinoza (140) and Nick Klemm (145).Onsted had Ben Pickford finish as runner-up at 135-pounds while teammates Isaac Westgate (125) and Clark Muth both placed fourth (130).Placing fifth for Onsted were Thomas Kast at 140-pounds, Eric Baiz at 145-pounds and Braxton Hella at 189-pounds.Blissfield had senior Calvin Beckey place second at 130-pounds and Andy Smith place sixth in the same division.Dakota Underwood placed second for Blissfield at 215-pounds.Blissfield’s Dan Barta placed fourth at 135-pounds while Noah Nieman placed fourth at 145-pounds.Clinton traveled to Grass Lake on December 27, for a Christmas dual tournament and placed third while the hosting Warriors won the tournament. The Redskins went 3-2 for the day. Clinton opened with a win 60-21 win against Blissfield and followed with a heartbreaking 39-38 loss to Reading before losing 44-34 in the third round to Grass Lake.Clinton responded by finishing the day with two wins, beating Stockbridge 64-15 and Chelsea 45-35. “I was pleased to see us respond and finish the day on a positive note after losing back to back dual meets in the middle of the day,” said Clinton coach Jeff Rolland. “We have to get better at fighting off our backs to save team points. Again we did see a lot of improvement on things we have been working on. We are getting closer and hope the hard work starts paying off with the new year.”Leading the Redskins were the Ward brothers. Kamden Ward went 5-0 while Keagan Ward went 4-0 in their first full action since coming back from the Redskins’ extended football season. Christian Ford, Nick Rolland, Huntter Trubiano, and Josh Brown each went 3-1 for the day while Hunter Mellinger, Fletcher Mellinger, Nick Lacoss, and Tanner Phillips went 3-2. Karson Perry and Brett Tschirhart both finished 2-1.
