Melvin Lloyd Oberst

Melvin Lloyd Oberst, age 85 of Tecumseh went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019 at his home.  He was born March 14, 1933 in Dearborn, the son of the late Russell Yale and Loraine Esther (Manzel) Oberst.  On November 21, 1959 in Detroit, he married Nancy Carrol Kieffer and they have shared 59 years together.

Melvin proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He co-owned the Oberst Agency with his brother, David before going on to work and retire from Ford Motor Company. He was a former member of the Tecumseh Kiwanis Club. Melvin loved photography, traveling and was an avid reader. He enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers and Michigan football.

In addition to his wife, Nancy, he is survived by his children, Mike (Jenny) Oberst of Tecumseh, Kim (Gary Winters) Frayer of Canton and Michele Scheffler of Tecumseh; one brother, David (Linda) Oberst of Grand Rapids; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Brian Oberst.

Visitation for Melvin was held on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019 from 4-7 p.m. at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. with Pastor Dan Hammarberg officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.  Condolences may be offered to the family at handlerfuneralhomes.com.
