Jamie Mossburg replaced head varsity boys basketball coach Scott Norkey just a couple of weeks before the varsity boys basketball season opener, set for Thursday at Dundee. No reason was given by Tecumseh Public Schools for the hurried replacement of the former head coach.

“The kids are working hard giving their best effort now and trying to continuously improve given the situations that have occurred,” said Mossburg. “What I can count on more so is their effort and willingness to participate with them as their leader and coach.”

Mossburg said he’s had little time to prepare for the season but has a good group of players to depend on. He added that the former coaches playbook will be used to start the season and he will gradually incorporate his own style of play as the season progresses. “Right now they need stability more than anything else,” said Mossburg. “So, I’m tweaking stuff but going with what we have at this current point.”

Tecumseh starts its season with back-to-back games, opening at Dundee on Thursday and following with a game at Airport on Friday. “We have four returning seniors who played last season and we’ve got some nice upcoming JV, now varsity players as juniors,” Mossburg said of what he has to work with on the courts. The returning seniors are Dylan Smith, Sam Benschoter, Thomas Mammel and Zach Watkins.

Last Friday and Saturday the Indians had back-to-back scrimmages on Mossburgs’ second day as head coach. “Saturday’s scrimmage, it was nice to see some people’s capacity on the floor,” he said.

Mossburg was unsure of what the future would hold considering him remaining as the Indians’ head coach. “My responsibility is to fill the interim position at this time and I’ll give it my best shot. Then, from there, the administration will have to decide what they choose to do at that point.”
