Patriot boys ready to make some noise
For the past two seasons Briton Deerfield varsity baseball coach Doug Witt has worked with the same core group of players and this season he hopes it all comes together to create some success on the ball field.
“We are going to approach this season one game at a time and want to be competitive in what should be a very good Tri-County Conference,” said Witt. “This group has been fun to work with the last two years. They have a strong work ethic and a passion for baseball.”
The Patriots have seven returning seniors to help improve on last year’s overall record. The Patriots finished last season with an overall record of 9-17 and a TCC record of 5-9.
The returning seniors include Zach Bearinger (pitcher/infield) Tyler Gilson (catcher/infield), Landon Handy (catcher), Tyler Jacobs (infield), Adam Straits (infield), Josh Reau (outfield) and Brian Snyder (pitcher/ outfield).
Junior D. J. Gotz will be another to watch on the mound. He hit .448 offensively for the Patriots in the TCC last season and was named to the All-League’s first team.
Cody Meinert is also expected to do some damage from the mound while also being assigned some infield duty as well.
Junior Tommy Gardner will cover the outfield while sophomore Matt Mueller will spend time both in the infield and outfield.
Trent Swindeman is a sophomore pitcher who will also be assigned to the bases during the season.
Witt’s assistant coach, Scott Taylor, also returns for another season.
