Patriots end season with 32-0 loss to Loyola
A sign noting “Beat those Bulldogs” hanging from Britton Deerfield sidelines made it clear from the very start of the Division 7 regional final at Bishop Foley High School on Saturday, Nov. 10, that Patriot fans wanted to end Loyola’s season.
But the sign only pumped up the Bulldogs on the opposite side of the field and it was the Patriots’ season that came to an abrupt end. Loyola shut out BD with a 32-0 victory.
The Bulldogs also ended the Patriots season last year (44-14) in pre-districts.
Loyola continues its season with an undefeated record and No. 1 ranking while the Patriots packed up and went home with a record of 8-4. BD secured a spot in the playoffs with four consecutive victories to end the regular season and soundly defeated Dansville 32-2 for the district title.
But against Loyola, the Patriots struggled to make first downs while allowing the Bulldogs 314 yards on the ground and another 22 from passing.
The Bulldogs scored its first touchdown in the opening quarter on a big 76-yard run by Keymonn’e Gabriel. A two-point conversion set the score at 8-0 until the second quarter.
Loyola scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter, the first on a short three-yard burst by Gabriel, and the second on a 35-yard pass from Toby Sharpe to Calvin Johnson. A couple of two-point conversion runs gave the Bulldogs a 24-0 lead to end the first half.
BD spent its halftime break on the field with coach DJ Lutz going over his game plan. When the Patriots resumed play in the third quarter they were able to keep the Bulldogs from the end zone the entire quarter. However, they were also kept from adding any points and went into the final quarter still down 24-0.
A 10-yard run into the end zone by Gabriel midway through the final quarter (6:01) was the final touchdown of the game. Another two-point conversion run followed and ended all scoring.
BD finished its season 8-4 overall.
