Patriots lose 14-7 at Whiteford
Britton Deerfield lost 14-7 at Whiteford High School on Friday, Sept. 21, and fell to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the Tri-County Conference.
The Patriots took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with Jordan Osbun pulling in a five-yard touchdown pass from Leighton Merritt.
The Bobcats didn’t allow the Patriots another point while adding a touchdown in the second quarter on a four-yard run and another in the fourth quarter on a three-yard run. Whiteford failed on a two-point conversion run after the first touchdown but added two points on a conversion pass after their second touchdown.
“Defense was once again outstanding but an early fumble after a great stop by the defense inside the 20-yardline set up their first score,” said BD coach DJ Lutz.
“We lost another close game and it’s been pretty much the same story in all three losses — we lack a big play from anyone in key moments and we have too many mental mistakes late in games to kill drives offensively,” Lutz said. “Our backs are against the wall and we have to punch out of the corner and win out to make playoffs.”
Merritt gained 70 yards on 15 carries with one reception for 24 yards. He also threw a five-yard touchdown pass.
Osbun had one five-yard catch for a touchdown.
Tristan Pizana had one catch for 28 yards while Kray Sweinhagen rushed for 79 yards including a 40-yard kick off return to start game.
Josh Reau had 29 tackles, 13 solo, 16 assists and one tackle for a loss while Trent Swindeman had six tackles. Osbun added 10 tackles while Kris Iott had 10 tackles, one interception and one for a loss. Coach Lutz mentioned it was Iott’s best game of his career.
“There were some key drops in the passing game, and missed blocking assignments that are inexcusable at this point of the season,” Lutz said. “We are good enough to win out, that is one thing I am 100 percent sure off, whether we approach each week basically like a playoff game is completely up to the kids.”
BD plays next at Madison on Friday, Sept. 28, beginning at 7 p.m.
