Petitioners for backyard chicken ordinance collect 950 signatures

To the Editor,Our petition drive to legalize backyard chickens ended on April 30 and was a great success. We needed 650 signatures for the petition to be valid and collected 950 in the 21 days allotted to us. This indicates there is indeed significant support for a backyard chicken ordinance in Tecumseh.Throughout this campaign, people have consistently expressed enthusiastic support for our attempt to create positive change in Tecumseh, even if they weren’t interested in having backyard chickens themselves.Educating residents about the benefits of pet poultry has been a large part of our mission. In many cases, people who were originally opposed to the idea changed their minds and signed the petition after we addressed some of the common misconceptions and explained the details of the proposed ordinance.I would personally like to thank every single individual who signed the petition, as well as all those who weren’t eligible to sign but who encouraged us every step of the way. Thank you to our many supporters who circulated petitions around their neighborhood, at their workplace, and to friends and family.Thank you also to all those who lent a hand in other ways, especially Dr. Lorrie Tritt and Scott Whitehouse for speaking at our “All About Chickens” event and Red Mill Pet Supply for donating door prizes. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share our message of positive change, food freedom, and personal freedom throughout this process, and I look forward to co-creating a brighter future for Tecumseh alongside other forward-thinking residents.
