Raisin board voted for new tax with ‘many unanswered questions’

To the Editor,Raisin Township Board of Trustees just voted to assess the parcel owners $95 per year for the next five years!Jay Cavanaugh, Kami Johnson, Betty Holdridge and Larry Crittenden voted yes!Dale Mitchell, Debra Brousseau and Tom Hawkins voted no!How could anyone vote yes? There are so many unanswered questions! The township hall was filled, stand-up room only. It was so obvious that no one was in favor of the $95 per parcel fee! It is unfair! The board has no idea as to how many parcel owners there are or how many would be opposed! Tom Hawkins seems to have done his due diligence to research the issues. His research and statements were the only logical statements made!Tom Hawkins, Debra Brousseau and Dale Mitchell admitted their concerns for repair, maintenance, and safety of our roads, and for the people of our community. It seems they voted no for a number of reasons:So many opposed! Too fast, not thought-out! No set plans, no strategy! It’s legal, but unethical! Our Republican Governor has budgeted the least amount of money for our roads than any other Great Lakes State! Our state ranked 42nd or worse in per capita road spending!I’m tired of the GOP chant “Lower Taxes!” They claim to lower taxes, yet the infrastructure of our cities is neglected? Our municipalities have less money, which means cuts, downsizing our police and fire departments, less money for education, and loss of Federal grant money. We all suffer due to unethical decisions!Don McCallumRaisin Township
