Raisin Twp. man dies in house fire

A Raisin Township resident perished in a fire late Wednesday night, May 1, at 29 Crofton Court in the Heights subdivision. The Lenawee County Sheriff Department released the name of the victim as Jonathan G. Schmidt, 27.Raisin Township Department of Public Safety Director Scott Lambka said when firefighters arrived on the scene, they learned that there was at least one individual inside the house, but that two other occupants had gotten out.“We’re still investigating it with the assistance of the State Fire Marshal,” Lambka said on Thursday morning. “We still have people on the scene to determine the cause.”He said Raisin Township firefighters were assisted by departments from the City of Adrian, Adrian Township, Ridgeway, Palmyra, Madison, Tecumseh and Sand Lake, and fought the fire for at least two hours.A statement from the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office noted that Schmidt was trapped in the basement when fire personnel were able to reach him. Lenawee County Ambulance transported the man to ProMedica Bixby Hospital where attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
