Redskins win regional softball title on home field

Clinton’s varsity softball team punched its ticket to advance to the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) state quarterfinals at Chelsea on Tuesday, June 10 by winning the regional championship at home on Saturday, June 7.Clinton (34-4) advanced to the state quarterfinals at Chelsea on Tuesday and secured a 12-5 victory over Grosse Pointe Woods-University Liggett. The Redskins play next in the state semifinal on Friday against Unionville-Sebewaing at Michigan State University.Clinton beat Hanover Horton 8-0 in the regional semifinal and advanced to the regional final where the Redskins recorded a 7-1 victory over Napoleon for the title and right to advance to the state quarterfinal.In the championship against Napoleon, Megan Burton earned the win from the circle. She allowed no runs on four hits while striking out seven, walking one and hitting two batters.Ashleigh Donahey led the Redskins’ offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Kris Forest went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and solo home run. Sarah Turner also recorded a solo home run for the Redskins’ offense. Barkel, Dowell, Stapnowski and Turk each added a hit for Clinton.Burton was also the winning pitcher in the semifinal against Hanover Horton. She pitched five complete innings and struck out five. Burton didn’t allow any runs on two hits and one hit batter.Megan Nelson came in on relief in the top of the sixth inning and gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out four.Offensively, Donahey led the Redskins, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Hayley Turk went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Forest, Melissa Dowell and Elizabeth Barkel each added a hit and RBI. Sarah Turner also had a hit.
