Research firm names Raisin Twp. safest community in Michigan

Raisin Township has been named the safest community in Michigan, according to ValuePenguin, a consumer research company. Raisin was just one of three Lenawee County communities named in the study. Cambridge Township came in second while Madison Township ranked 19th.“That was a little surprise for everybody,” said Raisin Township Police Chief Kevin Grayer. “It was great to hear. It shows Raisin is a nice place to live.”ValuePenguin analyzed crime data from the 2013 FBI crime statistics, the most recent year data was available, and excluded towns with populations of 5,000 or less. The company standardized the cities to reflect violent and property crimes per 100,000 residents.Grayer mentioned that people are aware of the murder that took place in the township in 2013. The case is still making its way through court, which is why it was not indicated on the crime 2013 statistics. The company aggregated a crime score by weighing violent crime at 90 percent and property crime at 10 percent. ValuePenguin also took into consideration that smaller cities could have small increases of crime that could negatively affect the city’s crime score, and applied a logarithm to arrive at the cities’ final crime scores. Raisin Township earned a crime score of 26, based on the fact that there were zero violent crimes reported in the township in 2013 with very few property crimes for the resident population of 7,468. The study also noted that property values in the township exceed the state average by around 18 percent and that township residents earn about $10,000 more than the average Michigan citizen. Grayer attributed the township’s low crime to the citizens and residents in the community. Cambridge Township had a crime score of 89, while Madison Township scored 324. For comparison, Detroit had a crime score of 7,156.ValuePenguin’s work has been quoted by the Associated Press, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, CNBC, Reuters and others.
