Resident encourages citizens to vote on November ballot proposal for backyard chickens
To the Editor,Urban gardens and all that come with running a successful urban garden must be encouraged within our city’s limits. Vegetables, herbs, bees, compost and chickens all are essential for urban gardens. Folks who are active in urban gardening are responsible, ethical, and well educated about the many facets of urban gardening. In Tecumseh, this group is quickly expanding as interest in local sustainability and community action grows. I have learned so much and have made many great contacts in Tecumseh and our surrounding area. Our local farmers and our city’s urban farmers love to share their knowledge and their resources.I applaud Ron Wimple and Gary Fox for their encouraging words at last Monday’s city council meeting. Mr. Wimple summed up what has happened with the folks involved with this grass roots movement perfectly: “They came to the city and to the council to try and work with the city to get the chicken program in place and they ended up being punished for coming to the city with this proposal.”Residents should not be punished for encouraging change and creating change. Our local officials whom we elect need to listen to us. It is unfortunate that this issue needs to be drawn out even longer than it already has been. But, I am looking forward to some chicken-keeping classes this summer and a fun get-out-the-vote effort this fall. I encourage our citizens to get involved and to VOTE! I am hopeful that on November 3, 2015, Tecumseh’s chicken ordinance will be approved.Safca FrostTecumseh
