Retired teacher supports election of Nancy Jenkins

To the Editor,Is education important to parents and grandparents in Lenawee County? If so, do you know that Rep. Nancy Jenkins has voted to increase K-12 funding by $1.2 billion, in spite of what you might have heard to the contrary? From the Granholm days, pressure is now being felt by our schools to teach college-prep courses such as taking a foreign language. As a result, classes are on overload with students who don’t have a choice. Consequently, the atmosphere and success of learning are diminished. Many college students take remedial English (without credit) until they are prepared for college work. Doesn’t it seem as though having more English (writing instruction) would be of more importance than a year of foreign language in high school?Desperately needed by some employers are those trained in specialty skills such as plumbing, heating, air-conditioning, welding, electrical, etc. Len-awee has many multi-talented students who would benefit from courses at Vo-TECH Center. Rep. Jenkins has advocated for advancing vocational educational options. As a retired teacher, having taught nearly 30 years, I have appreciated that my pension has not been cut. Thanks to Rep. Jenkins, she has helped save teachers’ retirement system from collapse and helped school districts get more dollars into the classroom. Those now teaching, would also like the assurance of a good pension. I urge you to vote for Nancy Jenkins!Margaret NeurothBlissfield
