Says “no” to having backyard chickens in the city

To the Editor, I write this to say there are a lot of people in the City of Tecumseh that do not want chickens in our city. It has been stated many, many, times that “Why do a few people get to say what everyone else should or can do?” I say... That is what is happening in reverse. Those that speak out against this movement have been named called and bullied time and time again. I do not want my name included as I fear just this.At the Celebrate Tecumseh event the petition signature gathers approach many people who tried to walk away but were followed and pushed to answer why they would not sign. This event was to have local business to shine not to have citizens bullied into signing something they do not want! I saw a person sign to just get them to leave her alone. I have attended council meetings from the beginning on this issue and even then a gentleman stood up to voice his concern but refused to give his name as he feared being “letter bombed” (it’s in the record, you can check). Many people being sent letters calling them uneducated, fearful, small minded, and even elitists! Council members threatened with recall! It seems the TH [Tecumseh Herald] is a backer and not reporting the other side.Time and time again it seems a “pro chicken in the city” article is being printed. We live in a city and not zoned agricultural? If we have chickens then I say all citizens should ask that their taxes be lowered to reflect that change. When asked why people want chickens it’s always, for food but when they stop laying then what? They instantly become not food but pets... Chickens are not pets. Stick to one side of the fence. Have you read the ballot proposal? Check it out, no license, no restrictions, no fees? I say no chickens. Maybe I should ask for a goat? Could be next for the City of Tecumseh.“The place where city is just a word.”Aurora MomcilovichTecumseh
